 Civil peace


The story civil peace by Chinua Achebe is set in the aftermath of the Nigerian civil war. It is about the effects of the Nigerian civil war on the people. The main protagonist of the story is Jonathan Iwegbu who is living with his wife and children. He often repeats the phrase "nothing puzzles god" to explain both good and bad furtune to himlself lucky because he was survived with his children and wife during Nigerian Civil War. He had his bicycle which he had buried during the war to make sure it wouldn't be stolen, he turned it into a taxi and earned money for his survival. In two weeks he earned 150 pounds.

He travelled to the capital city Enugu and found that his house was still standing when other structured around it were ruined. Then house required some repairs. So he collected zinc wood cardboard and hired a carpenter to rebuild the house. Then he moved his family backed to home. The family worked hard to earn money and rebuild their lives. The children picked mangoes and sold them to the soilders wives. His wife makes akara balls and sold them to their neighbours. When Jonathan knew that his job as a miner is not possible, he involved in selling wines.

Jonathan is given an award of 20 pounds for turning in the Biafran Money to the treassury. He leaves the office with his money in his pocket. He carefully walks thinking that the thief wouldn't steal it. That evening he has trouble in falling asleep. He finally tires to sleep but woken by the sound in the room. A group of thieves demands 100 pounds promising not to hurt Jonathan and his family if he co-operates with them. Frighten, the family call neighbour and police but nobody responds and comes to help them. He replies that all he has is 20 pounds and is ready to give it for his family protection. Some thieves insist that they should search the house for more but the leader agrees with the amount and accepts it.

The next morning the neighbour gather to review the results of the nights unfortunate disturbance. They discover Jonathan and his family are back at works. Jonathan explains that the reward money can't comparr to what he lost in the present rather than regret.
